Cool camera terms

Do not let all the fancy camera tech terms confuse you. Here are the main ones to keep in mind. Megapixels (MP):
The number of MPs specified indicate how high or low the
camera's resolution is. If you are planning on printing very large photos and portraits you will need a camera with high Megapixels. If you will be printing normal size photos, a 5MP camera is fine. Also keep in mind that higher MP photos take up more space if you store them on your PC.
Optical Zoom:Using the optics of the camera the image is brought forward much the same way as binoculars and other instruments. When using optical zoom, quality remains the same and the full resolution of the camera can be used on the zoomed image. The rating of optical zoom on a camera is measured like 2x 4x 8x etc, bringing the image 2x 4x and 8x closer respectively. Make sure you do not confuse the camera's optical zoom with digital zoom. Digital zoom only enlarges the image and makes it appear closer.
DSLR:

Stands for digital single-lens reflex camera
(or digital SLR).
This is a digital camera that uses a mechanical mirror system and pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera. These cameras are larger and you typically take a picture while looking through the viewfinder (eye hole) rather than looking at the LCD screen like a point and shoot or
 compact camera.
